Miles Johnston

Miles Johnston
Hivemind

Miles Johnston's work mostly compromises themes of distortion or mirroring - something I believe that is difficult to execute tastefully, however is successful in this instance. Through Johnston's high level of fundamental painting skill and classical but effectively stylistic rendering technique. His painting style and use of lighting creates strong, bold forms that compliment his focus on the surreal, creating vivid spatial illusions.

Miles uses a soft brush stroke to finely render gradients and subtle shading, creating an image reminiscent of a photograph taken with a large aperture.

Johnston's adaption of traditional media and a classical approach to painting in a very contemporary, graphical but importantly tasteful execution is inspirational to me, encouraging me to not only maintain a close eye to classical painters but also to look toward traditional media given its ability to retain contemporary functionality.

Johnston retains a classical rendering style in his drawing, using extremely soft shade to render his forms. Such approach is intriguing to me for its difficulty to effectively produce - instead I find blocked shade to more effectively render an image with pleasing stylistic results - especially in design or preliminary drawing.
